Moving Tips
Tips for a successful move:
The best way to avoid problems is to plan ahead, be informed, and be prepared!
- Use a mover who has a UTC permit.
- Get a written estimate and compare it to the final bill. The estimate should clearly and accurately describe all charges.
- A verbal quote does not guarantee the charges of your move. (If it is not in writing, it is NOT an estimate!)
- A non-binding estimate is a written estimate of what your move would cost based on the mover's survey of your goods. Your final cost can be more than your non-binding estimate - though there is a limit on how much a company can exceed the estimate.
- A binding estimate is a written estimate that guarantees the price you pay based on the items to be moved and the services listed on the estimate.
- Understand the bill of lading before you sign it.
- Understand the mover's liability for your goods before the move.
- Be at the destination at the time of delivery.
- Check the condition of your goods upon delivery.
- If your goods are damaged, note it on the bill of lading.
- Keep the lines of communication open with your mover at all times.
Before the Move:
Choose a mover:
Get recommendations from friends, neighbors, co-workers, or others who have used the mover recently.
Get written estimates for the cost of your move from a number of moving companies and compare costs and services.
Choose a mover that has a valid UTC permit. You may access the information on the commissions website: www.wutc.wa.gov or by calling 1-800-562-6150.
After the Move:
BE at the destination at the agreed-upon time of delivery. Check for damages while the mover is present. If there is loss or damage, make a specific notation on the bill of lading.
Be prepared to Pay:
You must pay for the move before your goods are unloaded. If you have made other arrangements, you should note it on the bill of lading.
WUTC rules ensure that in no instance are you required to pay more than 25% above your WRITTEN ESTIMATE.
If you received only a verbal estimate, the mover is not restricted to charging you the amount quoted to you.
If you find your goods have been damaged, ask the mover for a claim form. All claims must be filed in writing and the mover must acknowledge written claims within 10 days and respond to them within 120 days. Be sure to keep the damaged property, the mover has the right to inspect any damaged property before settling a claim.
